Dixie Restoration Parts alternator restoration services include the following:

  1. Once received from the customer, alternators are carefully inspected and “road grime” cleaned to make sure there are no missing parts or case cracks/scaring that may prevent an acceptable finished product. You will be notified immediately if any significant problem is uncovered.
  2. After this initial cleaning, the alternator’s details are photographed and a CD record of the customer’s unit is started. This allows us to closely duplicate any original inspection marks we find during the initial inspection. The unit is then given an internal tracking number – usually the alternators assembly date.
  3. The alternator is disassembled and the small parts, which can be reused, are sent to the platers or restored in-house.
  4. The alternator shells are carefully cleaned using a proprietary method, which very closely duplicates the original OEM fresh cast aluminum. Absolutely no detail is lost from the original casting and often after cleaning, previously hard to read stampings are improved because of the cleaning method used.
  5. Unless the customer specifies otherwise, the stator and rotor are stripped, cleaned, and refinished with a coating that closely duplicates the original tinted electrical varnish.
  6. The original pulley is carefully cleaned and a semi-gloss paint is reapplied.
  7. The alternator is then reassembled and original paint markings, if any, are reapplied.
  8. The alternator is bench tested using OE test equipment to insure correct amperage output is obtained under typical electrical accessory loadings. A photo record is made of this test showing the amperage output.
  9. The alternator is then professionally packaged.  At the customer’s request, the appropriate inspector label, wire loom, and plastic insulator for the battery output stud are included for a small additional charge.
  10. The customer receives a photographic record on CD for his/her information along with a detailed invoice, product warranty, and Dixie Restoration Parts contact information. We guarantee all of our restoration work for a full year. Cost for the basic alternator restoration is $280.00.

Does it make sense to settle for a parts store rebuild when Dixie Restorations can make your alternator its own showpiece?

Please contact us for instructions on shipping your alternator for this service. Do not send your cores to our Acworth location! Send your alternator to our restoration facility at the following address:

For any questions prior to shipping, call 803-924-6247 (ask for Jim).

Please Note: Include your contact name, address and phone number on paperwork inside the box you ship your parts in. Also, the box needs to be sturdy enough to carry a 15 lb metal rock rolling around inside of it which is trying to bust out. This means packing the box with cardboard or heavy paper (foam peanuts do not work well for this type of heavy item). Package it well so it doesn't get damaged...the weight of the item coupled with the brittleness of the aluminum work against it in shipping.

Dixie Restoration Parts starter restoration services include the following:

  1. Once received from the customer, starters are carefully inspected and “road grime” cleaned to make sure there are no missing parts or case cracks/scaring that may prevent an acceptable finished product. You will be notified immediately if any significant problem is uncovered.
  2. After this initial cleaning, the starter’s details are photographed and a CD record of the customer’s unit is started. This allows us to closely duplicate any OEM inspection marks we find during the initial inspection. While these are commonly found on alternators, they are not typical of starters supplied to CC. The unit is then given an internal tracking number – usually the starter’s assembly date stamped into the armature housing.
  3. The starter is disassembled and the small parts, which can be reused, are sent to the plater's or restored in-house.
  4. The starter’s aluminum housing is carefully cleaned using a proprietary method, which very closely duplicates the original OEM fresh cast aluminum. Absolutely no detail is lost from the original casting and often after cleaning, previously hard to read stampings are sometimes because of the cleaning method used. The steel armature housing is stripped to bare metal and repainted to match the factory low gloss enamel finish. Please note: At this time we are unaware of any U.S. company that will provide small parts electro plate galvanizing that was the OEM finish on some 68-74 bendix mechanism covers. If the original finish has been degraded and cannot be cleaned, we substitute a black oxide or dull clear (bluish silver) zinc finish on this stamped metal piece.
  5. The armature and field windings are cleaned and electrically tested for fitness and resistance.  A new brush holder is installed and armature shaft end-play is adjusted if necessary. A new, heavy duty, five roller bendix mechanism replaces the weaker, less reliable, factory installed piece unless the customer specifies otherwise. New thrust washers are installed.
  6. The starter is reassembled and bench tested to insure proper operation. A photo record is made of this test showing the bendix gear engaged and “at rest."
  7. The restored starter is then professionally packaged for shipping. The customer receives a photographic record on CD for his/her information along with a detailed invoice, product warranty, and contact information. We guarantee all of our restoration work for a full year. Cost for the basic starter restoration is $250.00.
